Summertime Home Maintenance

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Maintenance Tips

Home maintenance is important come summer time. There are lots of things that can be done and appliances that can be checked in order to properly maintain a household during this season.

Inspect and Tune Up Air-Conditioners and Fans

Inspecting the air-conditioners and fans are important because these are most frequently and heavily used during summer. These appliances must be kept in good condition. Air conditioning units are best left to professionals. Due to the high costs associated with running an air conditioner, a significant amount of money can be saved money on your electric bill if the household’s air-conditioner is properly maintained

Fan blades should be kept free from dust, whether using a ceiling fan or an electric fan. A duster or a piece of cloth may be used in cleaning. An old pillowcase is a great way to keep dust from flying around during cleaning.  Simply place the entire pillowcase on the fan blade and gently wipe the blade while removing.  The dust will remain inside the cloth “bag” rather than spreading through the air.

Roof Check and Maintenance

With sunny, warm days, summer is a great season to check the roof and make all the necessary repairs. By doing this, you can prevent small problems from becoming larger ones. Remember to check for even the most minor leaks, rusting, and other concerns.

Clean Gutters

Gutters should be cleaned regularly to keep the roof and foundation in good repair. Cleaning out gutters will prevent leaves, twigs, rocks and other things from blocking the passageway of water. You can do the cleaning yourself or hire a service provider.

Window Check

A window check is necessary if you want to avoid the summer heat from entering your house. Make sure that the sealant on both inside and outside are secured. A toothbrush can be used in cleaning the window to get to areas and crevices that are hard to reach.  A clean and well-maintained window will keep the house looking great and as energy efficient as possible.

Keeping your home in the best shape possible is a big job, but very rewarding.  We hope your summer is a great one!

AmbassadorBruce Laminate Floors - Black Forest

  • Glides or floor protectors on the bottom of your furniture will prevent possible scratching or abrasions.
  • It’s important to lift heavy furniture instead of dragging or pulling them.
  • Use pieces of carpet face down under heavy objects when moving them across your floor.
  • Spot cleaning and occasional complete cleaning of your laminate floor can be done using the manufacturer’s recommended products.
  • Never use abrasive cleaners, steel wool or scouring powder.
  • Do not use soap-based detergents or “mop-and-shine” products.
  • Never flood your floor with water or cleaner.
  • Do not wax or polish your laminate floor.
  • Never try to refinish or sand your laminate floor.
  • Durable but not indestructible, your laminate floor can be damaged by stiletto heels.
  • But the good news is that the finish on your laminate floor can help protect the floor from sunlight and the typical fading you find with aging hardwood floors.
  • Keep in mind that if a repair is necessary in the future, the replacement product may be a slightly different dye lot and/or texture than the initial installation.
  • However, with time and usage, the repair will blend in with your original product.
  • For additional care procedures please refer to the manufacturer’s care and maintenance instructions and recommendations.

Tips for Caring for your Countertops

Soon you’ll be in the kitchen cooking up a fabulous holiday meal for all your guests. There will be plenty of slicing, dicing, mashing and roasting going on, so make sure you are taking the right precautions to properly care for your countertops. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Wipe down granite countertops with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
  • Avoid alkaline solutions like  soap, abrasive cleaners, and citrus cleaners when cleaning granite countertops.
  • Steel wool will scratch most countertops.
  • Only use food-grade mineral oil (except vegetable or olive oils) to prevent wood butcher block countertops from warping and drying out.
  • Use coasters or a tray under cooking oil bottles. They can leave a ring mark on stone surfaces that can be difficult to remove.
  • Protect your marble counter from things like: lemon, vinegar, tomato, and other acidic foods.
  • Protect your countertop from hot pots and pans with a trivet because burn marks are permanent.

Create a Green Living Space

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Maintenance Tips

Do you know how to make your home green? There are ways you can make your home more eco-friendly without having an expensive whole house renovation. Here are four tips that can help you start creating a green living space.

1. Keep caulked areas caulked. Every degree of temperature variance in a home can result in up to 10% addition to your heating and cooling expenses.

2. Check your doors. Energy can be lost through doors that are not spaced properly from the floor. If you are having flooring replaced or added, a professional installer can check your doors for proper install height.

3. Minimize use of space heaters. Spaces heaters are energy hogs and can generate more than 2 pounds of greenhouse gas per hour. These heaters don’t help your hardwood floors because the heaters increase the contraction of hardwood floors.

4. Purchase hardwood floors with the FSC Seal that are not clear cut or harvested in a sustainable fashion. There are only 4% of our own native, old growth forests still standing. The US is the worlds largest importer and consumer of timber woods and products.

If you live in the St. Louis area and need eco-friendly flooring, make sure you stop by Ambassador Floor Company in Chesterfield, MO.

Keep Your Carpet Looking Great With These Tips

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Maintenance Tips

Carpet is a stylish and comfortable flooring option, and at Ambassador Floor Company in Chesterfield, Missouri, we carry a huge variety of high-quality carpets from the best brands, like Karastan, Mohawk, and many others.

Stains happen, but you don’t have to let them ruin your carpet! Find out how to keep your carpet looking great with these helpful tips from Real Simple.

To clean stains from wine, ketchup, chocolate, coffee, tomato sauce, juice, etc:

  • Use a white cloth and detergent solution to dab at the spot repeatedly, then hold and press the cloth on the stain for a few seconds. After 15 minutes, soak up any excess liquid with a dry white cloth.
  • Next, repeat step one but use white vinegar instead of detergent. Wait another 15 minutes, allowing the white vinegar to remove any detergent left in the carpet fibers, which if left will attract dirt.
  • Rinse the carpet by blotting with a cloth and lukewarm water. Let dry.
  • If the spill is particularly bad, put a 1/2 inch stack of white paper towels on the stain and sit a baking dish on top for 15 minutes.

(Tips are for synthetic fiber rugs. For tips on cleaning natural-fiber rugs, check out the article linked above.)
