3 Ways to Transform your Concrete Basement Floor

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design Tips, slider

Turning your unfinished basement into a living space is a wonderful idea. Back in the day, remodelers and homeowners would cover up those unsightly gray cement floors with some carpet or tile. Today, you can hire a flooring contractor to spruce up those concrete floors. Here are three decorative basement floor ideas that will make a beautiful floor for your live-in basement.

  • Stamped Concrete Overlays – No need to take out the existing slab, just add a stamped overlay in a decorative pattern. The overlay can be tinted with color and stained.

  • Stain the Concrete – Stained concrete allows you to obtain a variety of designs using different techniques, colors and applications.

  • Polished Concrete Flooring – Achieve the luxurious look of marble or granite floors with polished concrete flooring.

4 Tips for Buying Rugs

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design Tips, slider

Alix Perrachon, decorative carpet expert and author of “The Decorative Carpet: Fine Handmade Rugs in Contemporary Interiors,” shared some of his tips for buying rugs from the newly released book with Veranda magazine, and we think they are worth passing along:

  1. Find a reputable dealer that you can trust and that will let you test out a rug before buying.
  2. Know the difference between handmade and hand-knotted rugs because they are frequently marketed as the same. A true hand-knotted rug is the highest quality rug that will last a lifetime. Don’t pay extra for hand-tufted rugs. They are not the same as hand-knotted.
  3. Don’t purchase rugs with “fuzzy” patterns or designs. This is a sign of poor quality. Since hand-knotted rugs often have imprecise patterns, be sure to verify it is such before buying.
  4. Watch out for repainting on antique rugs. An antique rug will necessarily be more faded, so vibrant colors on an antique rug are a dead giveaway that it’s been retouched.

While natural surfaces such as hardwood remain popular, new flooring technology allows manufacturers to produce many styles and patterns on almost any flooring material, while maintaining all the texture and charm of the inspirational surface. Consumers reap the benefits with the durability of porcelain or ceramic tile, for example, and the beauty of a favorite fabric or natural wood. Daltile’s new faux-finished porcelain and wall tile lines demonstrate the versatility of the technology and its application in today’s modern  homes.
