The Green Characteristic Of Wool

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in News From Us

There are many factors that can affect the quality of your indoor air, including your carpet. There are many low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emission carpets, but it is wool carpets that will work harder than other materials to remove contaminants from the air and improving the health of the indoor environment.

Wools of New Zealand has given noticed to this “green” characteristic of wool through a new Wool: Clean Air Certification program. Carpets that carry a Wool: Clean Air Certified label have been tested by a certified independent laboratory and must pass stringent VOC emission testing for 13 contaminants. In addition, the products are required to meet scientifically established testing standards that verify reductions of VOCs in the indoors

“Wool is proven to significantly reduce indoor air contaminants within seven hours of installation and to keep contaminants out of the air for 30 years,” says Elise Demboski, executive director of North America for Wools of New Zealand. “Unfortunately, this unique attribute is overlooked since wool only represents 2% of the market. Through the Wool: Clean Air Certified program, we are bringing wool to the forefront where it will be noticed.”

Wool: Clean Air Certified is an Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) program managed by Wools of New Zealand. In addition to meeting the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED point requirements, the certification also meets the standards for California Section 01350 and Collaborative for High Performance Schools CHPS.

Carpets and rugs containing a minimum of 50% wool are eligible for Wool: Clean Air certification, with Wools of New Zealand partners benefiting from reduced testing fees. Product samples are submitted by platform, which is dependent upon backing and latex type. Every platform is fully retested on an annual basis to maintain the integrity of the Wool: Clean Air certification.

Karastan Carpets were one of the first companies to carry the Wool: Clean Air Certified label, according to Floor Biz Karastan had actually surpassed the testing standards and prove to significantly reduce indoor air contaminants.

Ambassador Floor Company in St. Louis is proud to carry Karastan Carpets.

Understanding Carpet Fibers

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in News From Us

In the carpet industry the used fibers are nylon, polypropylene, acrylic, polyester, wool and cotton.  These materials make up more than 99% of the fiber used by U.S. carpet industry.  Each of these carpet fibers have its own unique properties, some fibers have low resiliency and only should be manufactured in high-density loop pile constructions to limit crushing. Other fibers have the tendency to absorb oily soils and other oil-based compounds and should be carefully considered before installing in areas subject to these contaminants. There is no one perfect fiber or carpet, it is a matter of finding a carpet that is most suitable for your home. Use this chart from the Carpet Buyers Handbook to help you compare your options and selecting the perfect carpet for your home.

Green Flooring For Your Kitchen

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in News From Us, slider

Are you planning a kitchen remodel? Then mostly likely you are looking to replace your old flooring with new stylish and maybe green flooring. We have complied a list of sustainable flooring, that are strong enough to stand up to the regular wear and tare of your kitchen as well as make your kitchen a little more green.

  • Linoleum: Real linoleum is an all-natural flooring option made of linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments, all pressed onto a jute backing. It’s long-lasting, easy to clean, and often contains recycled content.
  • Wood: Wood is a classic and durable flooring option. Just make sure that the wood you choose is Forest Stewardship Council certified, or salvaged/reclaimed wood. Avoid products with added formaldehyde, which are sometimes used in engineered/pressed wood backing or sublayers. Also look for sealers and cleaners that are environmentally benign and low-VOC.
  • Tile: Tile is beautiful and durable, and you can find companies that make their tile products with up to 100% recycled glass or ceramic.
  • Stone: Look for locally (or at least domestically) mined and fabricated stone, but avoid buying imported stone in order to reduce transport-related energy. If you need to use a sealer, make sure it’s a low-VOC product (less than 200 g/L of VOCs, per SCAQMD Rule 1113).
