Earlier we discussed that the “Green” carpets certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) are marked with a Green Label, this is also true for vacuums. CRI certified vacuum machines improve the cleanliness of your carpet and the quality of your indoor air. The CRI vacuums remove allergens and dust that become trapped in the carpet fibers.
The CRI combines the indoor air quality of its Green Label and cleaning standards of its Seal of Approval program to identify even better performing vacuum cleaners. Under the enhanced Seal of Approval vacuum program, manufactures are held to a higher standard of performance and are rewarded with Gold, Silver, or Bronze ratings.
CRI employs an independent testing laboratory to measure:
- Soil removal — A machine’s performance in soil removal is measured precisely through NASA-enhanced X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology. The entry level of Bronze requires a 10 percent improvement of soil removal over the Green Label program and the standards are even higher for Silver and Gold levels.
- Dust containment — A residential vacuum must not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air. You want all that dirt, dust and pet dander locked tight in the vacuum, not escaping back into the air where it can be inhaled. Additionally, Gold level vacuums must meet ambient air quality standards.
- Carpet fiber protection — The vacuum must not affect the appearance of the carpet more than a one-step change (shop speak for “not very much”) based on one year of normal vacuum use.
Before being considered for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Seal of Approval ratings, a vacuum cleaner must comply with the carpet fiber protection standard as well as meet both the corresponding soil removal standard and dust containment The CRI Seal of Approval program makes vacuum cleaner selection easier for you. So look for the Seal of Approval logo or label on packaging, displays and on the machine itself.

Are you planning a kitchen remodel? Then mostly likely you are looking to replace your old flooring with new stylish and maybe green flooring. We have complied a list of sustainable flooring, that are strong enough to stand up to the regular wear and tare of your kitchen as well as make your kitchen a little more green.
- Linoleum: Real linoleum is an all-natural flooring option made of linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments, all pressed onto a jute backing. It’s long-lasting, easy to clean, and often contains recycled content.
- Wood: Wood is a classic and durable flooring option. Just make sure that the wood you choose is Forest Stewardship Council certified, or salvaged/reclaimed wood. Avoid products with added formaldehyde, which are sometimes used in engineered/pressed wood backing or sublayers. Also look for sealers and cleaners that are environmentally benign and low-VOC.
- Tile: Tile is beautiful and durable, and you can find companies that make their tile products with up to 100% recycled glass or ceramic.
- Stone: Look for locally (or at least domestically) mined and fabricated stone, but avoid buying imported stone in order to reduce transport-related energy. If you need to use a sealer, make sure it’s a low-VOC product (less than 200 g/L of VOCs, per SCAQMD Rule 1113).

Shopping for carpet can be difficult and with phrases like pulling, loop, and cable, it can be down right confusing. But thanks to Mohawk Flooring we have a guide that will teach you all the carpet lingo you need to know before purchasing a carpet.
Plush or velvet carpets are soft, smooth and elegant. They are perfect for formal areas, but show every footprint.
Saxonys are similar but not quite as smooth, so if footprints are a concern but you crave a traditional look, try one.
Loop carpets, where the fibers make a continuous uncut surface that many think of as Berber, will resist crushing and matting.
Cut and loop carpets combine the cut pile of a cable or plush with uncut lops to create interesting patterns.
Large, nubby yarns that lend luxury to a casual setting characterize Cable carpets.
Friezes are less full than shag, are contemporary and resist wear and footprints while Shags take height up with a variety of thickness and textures for comfortable – and trendy – design.
